On Sep. 9, former U.S. President Joe Biden's second son, Hunter Biden, launched a meme coin called LAPTOP.
A meme coin, as the name suggests, is a type of cryptocurrency inspired by internet jokes, viral trends, or pop culture that relies entirely on social media hype rather than traditional financial utility.

The LAPTOP meme coin is a nod to the laptop controversy surrounding Hunter Biden in 2020 when the files from a MacBook Pro he had dropped off at a Delaware repair shop and never retrieved made it to the headlines.
Donald Trump used the laptop's contents, including emails, photographs, and business records, to target Joe Biden through the 2020 presidential election and beyond.
Hunter Biden said the LAPTOP meme coin is a symbol of resilience, redemption, and recovery, which was earlier used by his adversaries to end him.
"They turned laptop into a weapon. I turned it into a token."
Biden also used it to take aim at Trump's meme coin, Official Trump (TRUMP), saying 20% of LAPTOP's supply is allocated to airdrops, including for those who lost money trading TRUMP tokens.
Trump launched the eponymous meme coin in January 2025 and is currently trading 97% lower than its peak of $73.43 on Jan. 19, 2025.
But Hunter Biden's LAPTOP is doing any better either. While it launched the peak of $199.51 on Sep. 9, it is currently trading 99.9% lower at $0.2177.
X has suspended the LAPTOP meme coin for allegedly violating rules.
On Sep. 13, Biden tagged X boss Elon Musk—himself a crypto and meme coin enthusiast—to get the account back before AI ends everything in 2030.

Biden attributed the AI threat deadline of 2030 to Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, urging Musk to revoke the suspension of the meme coin's account before the year.
Though Musk and Amodei have underlined the seriousness of the AI threat, neither has dropped the 2030 deadline as claimed by Biden.
Instead, it was Anthropic researchers who recently warned that AI could cause human extinction by 2030, prompting Musk and Amodei to underline the AI threat.
