Iceland Votes No to EU Accession Talks
Iceland will remain outside the European Union after voters rejected a government proposal to resume membership negotiations. Broadcaster RUV reported that 52.8% of voters rejected the government's push to reopen EU membership negotiations, while 47.2% voted in favour.A total of 225,031 votes were cast, resulting in a voter turnout of 82.5%.
The question returned to the political agenda under Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir's centre-left coalition government, more than a decade after Iceland withdrew its membership application in 2013.Following the result, Frostadóttir said Iceland would focus on strengthening its existing ties with the EU through the European Economic Area agreement, which it shares with Norway and Liechtenstein. She added that the No vote would end the debate for as long as her centre-left coalition was in power.
What the Result Means for Crypto Regulation
The vote has direct consequences for how Iceland's crypto industry is governed. The rejection keeps Iceland as a member of the European Economic Area and a signatory of the Schengen Agreement, meaning the country remains outside the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework umbrella.Icelandic firms will not automatically receive EU authorisations or access an EU passport as a result of the referendum.
For now, cryptocurrency activities in Iceland are primarily governed through general tax and financial laws rather than a dedicated crypto licensing regime. The lack of an EU passport may increase the cost and complexity for Icelandic exchanges, custody providers, and token issuers when serving EU customers.Firms based in Iceland that want to serve customers in the EU must obtain authorisation from an EU member state or work with EU-licensed partners.
That said, the picture could change over time. MiCA is widely expected to be incorporated into the EEA Agreement in the future, bringing Iceland into closer alignment with the broader European crypto regulatory framework. The main development to watch is the eventual incorporation of MiCA into the EEA Agreement, although no formal timeline has been announced.
