Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, arrives Oct. 23 at $1,999, and five concrete advantages separate it from Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Sept. 9 in Cupertino, California, pairing a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Preorders open Oct. 16.
The first argument for the Duo is protection from the environment.
Apple rates the phone IP68 for dust and water. Samsung rates the Fold 8 at IP48, which means it survives submersion but offers no defense against dust or particles larger than one millimeter, reviewers explained. Grit is the classic enemy of a folding hinge, so the gap matters more here than on a slab phone.
Apple also builds the Duo around a titanium frame and hinge cover, while Samsung uses aluminum, a side-by-side spec review showed.
None of this has survived independent drop or hinge testing yet. Both phones remain more fragile than conventional handsets, and the Duo will not ship for another month.

The second advantage sits under the display.
Apple's A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process, against the 3-nanometer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 that Qualcomm supplies for the Fold 8. One comparison found that the Apple chip should pull ahead in both productivity and gaming work.
Apple claims 50% more memory bandwidth and a 40% faster graphics processor than last year's A19 Pro.
The Duo adds vapor chamber cooling, which the Fold 8 does not have. That should help the phone hold its speed during long gaming sessions or sustained on-device AI work, though no benchmark results have been published.
Samsung counters with disclosed memory. The Fold 8 ships with 12GB of RAM, rising to 16GB on the 1TB model, while Apple has not said how much the Duo carries.
Charging is the third gap, and it is measurable.
The Duo supports 60-watt wired charging and refills half its battery in 15 minutes. The Fold 8 tops out at 45 watts and reaches 43% over the same 15 minutes. Wireless charging follows the same order, at 25 watts for Apple against 20 for Samsung.
Apple also confirmed that existing MagSafe chargers and accessories fit the Duo, despite its unusual shape. Samsung has stayed away from built-in magnets on its foldables and still leans on special cases for magnetic attachment.
Battery capacity is harder to judge.
Apple did not publish a figure and instead quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display. Samsung lists a 4,800 mAh cell, and only real-world testing will settle which lasts longer.
The fourth reason concerns input.
Samsung dropped S Pen support after the 2024 Galaxy Z Fold 6, so the Fold 8 works with no active stylus at all. Apple says the Duo will support the Apple Pencil, with that capability arriving later this year, according to launch details the company outlined at the event.
The stylus in question is the basic Apple Pencil USB-C, which lacks the pressure features of the Pro model. Many iPad owners already have one in a drawer.
Software reacts to the hinge as well. Fold the Duo to roughly 90 degrees during a video and the picture shifts to one half of the screen, with playback controls on the other. Samsung removed that layout from the standard Fold 8 while keeping it on the Ultra.
The fifth argument is the one buyers notice first.
Journalists who handled the Duo after the keynote reported that they could not make out the crease on the inner screen from multiple angles, although they could still feel it under a fingertip. Samsung's newest foldables also reduce the crease, but early impressions suggest Apple went further.
Apple covers the 7.6-inch inner panel with a nano-texture finish that cuts glare, and says the display material is 40% stiffer than industry norms.
There is an irony in that panel. Samsung Display manufactures the folding screens Apple uses, so the two rivals share a supply chain even as they compete for the same buyer.
Both phones also share a compromise. Neither carries a dedicated telephoto camera, which limits zoom photography on devices costing close to $2,000.
The case against the Duo is substantial, and it starts with the hand.
The Fold 8 weighs 201 grams to the Duo's 254, and it measures 4.5mm unfolded against Apple's 5.2mm. That 53-gram difference makes the Duo one of the heaviest iPhones Apple has ever sold.
Samsung also runs three apps side by side and up to five in windowed mode, while the Duo manages two. Samsung keeps a physical SIM slot, which Apple abandoned in favor of eSIM. Neither phone offers face recognition, since both hide a fingerprint reader in the power button.
Price cuts the same way, as reviewers compared the two price ladders. Samsung launched the Fold 8 at $1,899 and it has sold for less since, while Apple starts at $1,999 and climbs to $3,199 for the top storage tier.
Analysts are not sold on the pitch. Neil Shah, vice president of Counterpoint Research, described "a little bit of a lapse in positioning" at the launch. Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies said Apple avoided naming its target buyer.
Bob O'Donnell of TECHnalysis Research was blunter about the audience. "It'll be a status symbol, for a while, because I think it's going to be hard to get," he said.
Shah still expects Apple to sell close to 6 million units by the end of the year. That volume would hand the company roughly a quarter of the global foldable market. IDC expects foldables to account for less than 3% of all smartphone sales in 2026, with little change the following year.
Apple CEO John Ternusargued that the Duo "will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone."
That claim lands in a category Samsung built and nearly lost. The company shipped its first foldable in 2019, pulled it back after widespread reports of broken screens and peeling layers, and spent years rebuilding trust through seven more generations. It now holds about 40% of the market, and it says the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra outsold last year's Fold 7 by 30% in their first month on sale.
