Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin announced it will gradually restore access to customer accounts on Monday following a cyberattack that saw over $46 million stolen. Blockchain analysts have flagged the incident as significant, marking a critical moment for the exchange.
Phased Access Restoration
Initially, users will be able to view their balances, account statements, assets, and investments via the exchange’s website. However, transactions, withdrawals, and trading functionalities will only be reinstated in subsequent phases. These steps are contingent on the completion of independent security assessments, according to the company.
As a leading digital asset platform in Latin America, Mercado Bitcoin is prioritizing security checks in the service resumption process, ensuring user access is progressively expanded. The firm reassured customers that protecting their assets remains a top priority.
Compensation and Freezing of Stolen Funds
Mercado Bitcoin has confirmed that assets affected by the breach will be reimbursed using the company’s own resources. Impressively, over $15 million of the stolen funds have already been frozen with the help of industry stakeholders.
Mercado Bitcoin stated, “Assets impacted by the attack will be covered by company funds, and more than $15 million has been frozen with sector support.”
Additionally, the exchange’s trading desk is preparing to initiate necessary buybacks in both domestic and international markets. This move forms part of a strategic plan to cover deficits in user balances, ensuring the platform’s financial stability and user trust.
Ensuring Liquidity with Strong Cash Reserves
On the liquidity front, Mercado Bitcoin underscored its robust cash position, boosted by a $20 million investment from stablecoin issuer Tether. This capital injection strengthens the platform’s operational capabilities and expansion plans.
As an issuer of USDT, Tether ranks among the most prominent entities in the crypto sector. Mercado Bitcoin highlighted that this strategic investment supports its operational scaling.
The company stated, “Transactions, withdrawals, and trading will resume in later stages following independent security tests.”
In the aftermath of the attack, wallet activities and fund flows are being monitored closely. The timeline for reopening the platform fully will be a deciding factor in determining when user operations will return to normal.
