- MetaMask will operate independently under Joseph Lubin, focusing exclusively on its consumer wallet and self-custody products.
- Consensys will retain Linea and its Ethereum protocols and institutional infrastructure business under Lubin as executive chairman.
- Existing MetaMask users need no action, with apps, assets, private keys and access remaining unchanged after the separation.
Consensys Software Inc. will split into two independently operated companies, separating MetaMask’s consumer wallet business from Consensys’ protocols and institutional infrastructure. MetaMask will operate under its own name with Joseph Lubin as chairman and CEO, while a newly formed Consensys will retain Linea and other infrastructure businesses, with Lubin serving as executive chairman.

According to MetaMask, the split gives each company a separate focus. MetaMask will concentrate exclusively on its consumer platform and continue connecting users with tokens, DeFi protocols and networks.
Meanwhile, Consensys will continue its business-to-business and business-to-business-to-consumer activities. The company will focus on Ethereum technology, protocols and institutional infrastructure, including Linea.
MetaMask said Consensys will remain an important channel partner for the wallet business. The announcement comes after MetaMask’s 10th anniversary, with more than 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries.
User Access Remains Unchanged
For existing MetaMask users, the company said the separation requires no action. Apps, assets, private keys and access will remain unchanged after the restructuring. MetaMask also said its self-custody model will remain central to the platform.
Its consumer focus includes holding, moving, using and managing assets directly. That focus includes the recently launched MetaMask Money Account. According to the company, the account combines automated earning, spending and one-click trading within one self-custodial balance.
MetaMask said its cumulative transaction volume has reached trillions of dollars. However, the announcement did not provide a specific transaction figure.
Consensys Retains Linea And Institutional Work
The newly formed Consensys will carry forward the protocols and institutional infrastructure operations. Linea will remain within that business under Lubin’s executive chairmanship. Lubin will hold leadership roles across the two companies.
He will lead MetaMask as chairman and CEO, while acting as executive chairman of Consensys. The company said banks and asset managers have moved some projects from pilots into production. It also cited stablecoins and tokenized assets within its institutional work.
MetaMask framed its consumer mission around “Open Money,” describing money controlled directly by users. It said the concept focuses on open networks, portability, self-custody and internet-based access.
