OpenAI Prize

Sun’s new prize named the OpenAI research team recipient of its first $1 million top award for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes problem. The public GitHub record marks the problem solved and eligible to claim. The money has not been claimed.

OpenAI published its result Sept. 8, saying roughly 10,000 agents worked for about 88 hours before GPT-6 Astra spent another 17 hours formalizing and verifying the proof in Lean. The company said it does not intend to seek the $1 million Millennium Prize attached to the problem by the Clay Mathematics Institute.

The Clay institute still labels the problem active and said Sept. 11 that the announcement appears to settle the question, while its rules require a deliberate evaluation before any prize decision. That process is not finished. Sun’s separate prize uses machine-checkable proofs and named the OpenAI team without waiting for the same traditional review process.

Justin Sun Rules

Sun said his prize is designed to reward results regardless of whether a person or an AI system produced them, placing formal verification at the center of the award process. “I care only about the result, not whether the contributor is human or a machine,” Sun said. His repository also warns that OpenAI’s announcement is not peer review and that broad mathematical acceptance has not been confirmed.

Attribution questions remain because Tristan Buckmaster, a New York University professor, said unpublished work with a colleague had been stored in an OpenAI product, while adding that he did not know whether the model used it. “I am not accusing anyone of anything,” Buckmaster told The Guardian. OpenAI said its investigation found that his Codex prompts could not have influenced the system that produced the proof.

The dispute followed OpenAI’s Sept. 8 claim that its internal system had resolved the long-running Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem by showing finite-time singularity under the official conditions.

Clay created the Millennium Prize Problems in 2000, with $1 million attached to each. More than two decades later, Navier-Stokes remains formally active while mathematicians examine the new proof and questions of credit.
