Utility Without Value
Veteran trader Peter Brandt has taken a sharp stance on $XRP, labeling it a "fool coin" and challenging the widely held view that Ripple's payment utility justifies a higher market valuation. Brandt made the comments during an appearance on Cointelegraph's Trade Secrets.
Brandt said XRP can be effective for transactions and inexpensive to use, but that its utility does not by itself justify a rise in market value. To make his point, he used the U.S. dollar as an example, explaining that people do not buy dollars as a long-term holding asset simply because it is efficient as a medium of exchange. The same logic, he argued, applies to XRP.
Brandt said that XRP's payment use case and Ripple's banking partnerships do not necessarily mean its value will rise.He also cited uncertainty over XRP's total supply and expansion risk as additional reasons to be cautious about the asset as an investment.
Bitcoin Bulls, Altcoin Caution
Brandt's skepticism toward $XRP stands in contrast to his broader market outlook. He predicts Bitcoin could reach between $300,000 and $600,000 by late 2029, up from his earlier estimate of $250,000 to $300,000. He views Ether and Solana more favorably than XRP among altcoins, though he offered little detail on his reasoning.
For investors with a higher risk tolerance, Brandt recommends keeping crypto exposure measured. He suggests that financially secure investors allocate no more than 10% of their portfolio to digital assets, with Bitcoin holding the largest share, and warns against chasing newly launched tokens.
Despite calling XRP a "fool coin" in terms of investment value, Brandt has acknowledged its transactional utility, and his chart analysis has at times suggested XRP could surge, with a previous technical price target of $5.40. That nuance has done little to quiet the backlash from XRP supporters, who continue to point to the token's expanding use cases and fixed supply as reasons to remain bullish.
