Bitcoin Branding, Traditional Checkout

Strategy, the Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy, is drawing both attention and criticism for a line of Bitcoin-themed footwear in its online store. The company describes the mid-top sneakers as inspired by the original Air Jordan 1, combining custom company branding with leather overlays, Nike Air cushioning, and the Air Jordan Wings logo.A second sneaker, Nike Dunks, is also listed at $250.

Crucially, the store carries Strategy-branded Nike sneakers, specifically Air Jordans and Dunks, and they are custom-branded shoes inspired by the AJ1 and Dunk silhouettes, not an official Nike collaboration.Strategy's store carries 53 products in total, ranging from $10 Bitcoin-branded shoelaces up to $250 items, including Nike Dunks and the Jordans.

No Bitcoin at the Checkout

The irony is hard to miss. Checkout on the Strategy store only accepts cards and digital wallets like Apple Pay. The obvious payment method missing is Bitcoin, which is nowhere to be seen. This has sparked a wave of criticism online, with many pointing out the contradiction between the company's identity and its payment infrastructure.

Strategy's own balance sheet holds more than 840,000 $BTC, according to the company's public disclosures, making it one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin in the world. Since dropping the MicroStrategy name in February 2025, Strategy has increasingly built its public image around Bitcoin, turning what began as a treasury allocation into the company's defining feature.Michael Saylor, Strategy's founder and executive chairman, has built the company's public identity around treating merchandise as an extension of its Bitcoin pitch, and the store functions as much as a recruiting tool for the corporate-treasury crowd as a retail operation.

The shoes, launched September 4 through Strategy's online store, sold out by September 8, with all nine advertised sizes listed as unavailable. The company did not disclose how many pairs it offered or when inventory ran out.The viral posts concerning Strategy's Air Jordan and Dunk sneakers made their debut as the company recently paused buying $BTC for the time being.

The episode draws a sharp line between holding Bitcoin as a treasury asset and actually using it as a medium of exchange. The situation illustrates the difference between using Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset and using it as a payment method for goods and services. Whether Strategy eventually adds Bitcoin at checkout remains to be seen, but for now the brand and the payment rail are running in opposite directions.
