Tesla will unveil its long-delayed second-generation Roadster on Oct. 1, a spectacle CEO Elon Musk is staging while the stock sits down roughly 20% for the year.

Key Points:

  • Tesla set an Oct. 1 reveal for the Roadster, a car first shown in November 2017 and once promised for 2020 deliveries.
  • Analysts hold a consensus target near $397, but their individual calls range from $125 to $600.
  • Second-quarter revenue hit a record while operating margin fell to 1.4%.

Tesla Roadster Unveil Date

Tesla's account on Xposted a "Go for launch" teaser on Sept. 12, alongside a graphic showing the date. Musk confirmed the plan minutes later in a brief reply.

The company has since sent invitations to reservation holders for a show in Waco, Texas.

A countdown clock now runs on the official Roadster page. Tesla has released no pricing, no specifications and no firm delivery date for the car.

Attention has fixed on optional cold-gas thrusters built with SpaceX engineers, hardware meant to lift the car off the ground. Musk has said production will not start until 12 to 18 months after the reveal, whatever the event shows.

Tesla Stock Meets Its Catalyst

Investors arrive with a stock that has lagged, closing at $360.45 on Sept. 15, while bettors on Polymarketpriced a Roadster delivery by Dec. 31 at 4.5%, on thin total volume of about $1,019.

Wall Street is warmer than the bettors. Forty-three analysts put the consensus target at $396.94, roughly 8% above the current price. Their individual calls run from $125 to $600, a spread that shows how little agreement exists about what Tesla is worth.

Recent results explain that gap. Second-quarter revenue hit a record $28.24 billion, yet operating margin fell to 1.4% from 4.1% a year earlier, as operating expenses climbed 47% on artificial intelligence and robotaxi work.

So the reveal lands on a company that could use a fresh story. Musk told the All-In Summit that success was not guaranteed but excitement was. He added that the event would need a live audience to vouch that the footage was not AI.

Roadster Delays Since 2017

Some analysts see plain competitive logic behind the stunt. Electric hypercars from Rimac, Pininfarina and BYD-owned Yangwang have made sub-two-second acceleration close to routine, one auto writer argued, leaving Tesla to chase something rivals cannot copy.

Tesla also abandoned an earlier approach based on Model S Plaid components and developed the Roadster into an all-new carbon-fiber hypercar.

Waiting has been the story for nine years. Buyers put down $50,000 reservation fees after the 2017 debut and none has taken delivery, a gap that prompted OpenAI chief Sam Altman to complain publicly about the wait. This reveal follows an April 1 target, a late-April shift, a June postponement and an August plan, all within this year.
