Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has cautioned that growing Bitcoin adoption might trigger widespread bank runs and undermine trust in traditional fiat currencies, including the US dollar.

Bitcoin’s role in a changing financial landscape

Draper, who is widely recognized for his early investments in disruptive technology companies, has maintained a long-standing bullish stance on Bitcoin as a transformative financial asset. He recently emphasized on X that the world’s monetary system is undergoing a shift, highlighting the importance of holding Bitcoin during such a transition.

He argued, “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. It’s irresponsible to not own bitcoin,” underscoring his belief in the cryptocurrency’s essential place in future portfolios.

According to Draper, the initial stage of this transformation will involve companies beginning to accept Bitcoin payments alongside fiat currencies. Over time, he anticipated a shift to exclusive acceptance of the cryptocurrency.

First they’ll be like ‘We accept bitcoin.’ And then they’ll be like, ‘We only accept bitcoin,’ Draper predicted, suggesting a phased approach to Bitcoin-based commerce.

Potential impact on fiat currencies and banking sector

Draper warned that as trust in legacy financial systems and traditional currencies erodes, people may increasingly doubt the value of fiat—culminating in significant fund withdrawals from banks.

He stated that this process could lead to a fundamental change across financial markets, with individuals and institutions opting for alternatives like Bitcoin over legacy currencies.

“And then people will not value dollars, fiat. And so there’s going to be a run on the banks,” Draper remarked, predicting possible upheaval in conventional banking.

He added that those prepared for what he described as a “seismic shift” in global finance would be positioned ahead of peers and firms relying solely on conventional money.

Long-term Bitcoin predictions and recommendations

Draper has consistently projected Bitcoin as a leading candidate to supplant fiat currencies. Over recent months, he has reiterated several ambitious forecasts related to the cryptocurrency’s value and adoption.

In September, Draper restated his controversial prediction that Bitcoin could reach $250,000 in the next two years. He linked this possible rally to the next Bitcoin halving, scheduled for 2028, which will reduce rewards for miners and could constrict supply.

Mini dictionary: Bitcoin halving – A scheduled event occurring every four years where the reward for mining new blocks on the Bitcoin network is cut in half, slowing the rate at which new bitcoins are generated and impacting overall supply dynamics.

Draper has also suggested that dollar inflation could help drive Bitcoin to this milestone sooner. In April, he told attendees at the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas that Bitcoin could hit $250,000 within 18 months.

As part of his recommendations, Draper advised that companies consider allocating between 5% and 15% of their treasury reserves to Bitcoin, proposing this as a defensive strategy amid ongoing changes in the financial sector.

He told businesses that those prepared for a global financial realignment by diversifying reserves into Bitcoin would be better positioned than those holding only legacy currency assets.
