The U.S. Defense Secretary kept his Bitcoin while selling his defense stocks. That's the picture emerging from Pete Hegseth's 2025 annual financial disclosure, released by the Office of Government Ethics this week.

After taking office in January 2025, Hegseth sold dozens of individual stocks, including shares in defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, a common move for new cabinet members looking to avoid conflicts of interest.

His family then purchased 16 exchange-traded funds worth between $1.41 million and $3.05 million.

But the Bitcoin stayed.

A look at the portfolio

The disclosure lists Bitcoin held in a Coinbase account across two separate entries, one valued between $15,001 and $50,000, the other between $1,001 and $15,000.

The combined holding sits somewhere between approximately $16,000 and $65,000, as disclosure forms report value ranges rather than exact figures. Both entries list capital gains as the income type.

Hegseth's total reported assets come to at least $3.1 million across cash, retirement investments and crypto, including a single bank account with a balance exceeding $1 million.

That marks a notable jump from the $15,001 to $50,000 range reported for the same account in his December 2024 nomination filing.

Growing pattern in the Trump administration

Hegseth is not the only senior official in the Trump administration with crypto exposure.

President Donald Trump's own disclosure, filed in June, reported more than $50 million in Bitcoin and over $1.2 billion in earnings from crypto ventures. It also included $635 million from his meme coin.

The Trump family has also launched multiple crypto businesses since returning to the White House, including stablecoin issuer World Liberty Financial.

Vice President JD Vance also disclosed Bitcoin holdings worth between $250,001 and $500,000 in his Coinbase account in his 2025 annual financial disclosure. The reported value was unchanged from his 2024 vice presidential nominee filing.
