Trading Button Builds on Smart Cashtags
X is working on a feature that would let users buy cryptocurrency directly from posts on the platform, according to Nikita Bier, the former Head of Product at X. The trading button is still in a pre-deployment stage, with no confirmed launch date or exchange partners announced by the company.
The move would extend X's existing Smart Cashtags infrastructure. Bier said trade buttons are coming alongside the Cashtags system, which already displays real-time price charts for $SOL and $ETH inside posts and can recognise contract addresses for newly issued tokens. Once live, the buttons would let users move from discovering a token in their feed to trading it without leaving the app.
Smart Cashtags launched in April 2026, initially for iPhone users in the US and Canada. The feature supports major crypto assets including $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, $SOL and $DOGE, and also covers major stocks. The original copy also lists $ZEC and $XLM as potential candidates for the trading button, though X has not published a confirmed asset list.
Key Details Still Missing
Several important questions remain unanswered. A launch date, supported token list and execution partner have not been disclosed. X is not expected to act as a broker itself. The platform is more likely to surface real-time charts and redirect users to external partners for execution, consistent with its April pilot that partnered with Canadian brokerage Wealthsimple to enable trading from Smart Cashtags.
The development fits into Elon Musk's wider ambition to turn X into an everything app. X holds money transmitter licences in over 40 US states and has described X Money as central to its financial services expansion. A crypto trading button, if it ships, would represent a significant step toward that goal, placing the act of buying and selling digital assets inside one of the world's largest social platforms.
X has not confirmed exchange integrations or a launch timeline for the trading button.
