Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, reported a return to net inflows of approximately $2.3 billion over the past 24 hours. The development came after the exchange began restoring customer access in the aftermath of a major security breach. Market tracking data indicated that the incident led to an estimated $6.3 billion loss, and marked what blockchain security experts are calling the most significant theft in the history of crypto assets.

Exchange responds to industry’s largest theft

According to preliminary findings from Binance, the breach stemmed from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This allowed unauthorized parties to make withdrawals of Bitcoin, Ether, and multiple other digital assets across several blockchains. The extent and sophistication of the attack triggered widespread concern throughout the cryptocurrency sector.

As news of the incident spread, Binance experienced a surge in withdrawals, but the trend reversed as the exchange gradually restored withdrawal functionality. Industry participants noted an early sign of renewed user trust as deposits began to outpace withdrawals within hours of reopening access. Binance assured customers that it would cover any losses incurred as a result of the hack.

Efforts to contain the stolen funds involved tracing malicious wallets and blocking asset transfers across multiple platforms. Reports suggest that roughly $2.7 billion to $3 billion worth of cryptocurrencies were either frozen or restricted shortly after the breach.

Ripple, a leading enterprise blockchain company, added that it had frozen $200 million in RLUSD, a centrally administered stablecoin, after identifying connections to wallets linked to the suspected exploiters. The move underlined the distinctive ability of stablecoin issuers to intervene and limit the movement of misappropriated assets in such situations.

BNB, the native token of Binance, came under pressure after the breach was disclosed, falling nearly 8.7% in a single hour. Unlike other major cryptocurrencies, BNB’s price decline was exacerbated by its close ties to the Binance platform, despite the compromise not targeting the BNB Chain directly.

Market reaction and ongoing challenges

Futures traders responded by increasing short positions, pushing BNB’s funding rates into negative territory. The token eventually found support near its 200-day moving average but continues to trade below its pre-incident value, with technical analysts identifying $733 as a crucial resistance level in the coming sessions.

Meanwhile, the broader cryptocurrency market remained under pressure. Bitcoin hovered near $77,000, while numerous large-cap altcoins posted deeper monthly declines. Persistent outflows from cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, global geopolitical unrest, and uncertainty regarding central bank policies compounded market uncertainty, amplifying the shockwaves from Binance’s security incident.

“The market’s reaction reflects heightened risk aversion following the breach, with leading tokens underperforming and investor confidence being tested across centralized and decentralized venues alike,” according to industry analysts.

Binance’s ability to contain losses and restore user confidence will remain a focal point for investors as the exchange and its partners continue efforts to limit the movement of stolen assets and strengthen security protocols.
