Brazil’s largest private bank, Itaú Unibanco, has formally registered its cryptocurrency trading and custody services under the country’s new digital asset regulations. The bank became the first financial institution to formalize these operations through Brazil’s updated regulatory framework.
According to the announcement, Itaú informed Brazil’s Central Bank of its status as a virtual asset service provider. The registration covers cryptocurrency intermediation and custody, placing the bank’s existing digital asset operations under the new regulatory structure.
Significantly, the development marks an important step for Itaú, which entered Brazil’s cryptocurrency market in December 2023. The institution also ranks as Latin America’s largest bank by market value, with an established presence across traditional financial services.

Brazil’s updated digital asset regulations establish different authorization requirements for banks and independent cryptocurrency service providers operating within the country.
Under the framework, financial institutions holding Central Bank authorization can provide virtual asset services through a formal notification process. Meanwhile, cryptocurrency companies without existing banking authorization must obtain separate operating approval before offering regulated services.
Itaú completed its notification on October 27, formally bringing its cryptocurrency brokerage and custody activities under the established regulatory requirements.
The bank launched cryptocurrency trading in December 2023 and has gradually expanded its digital asset offerings through its banking platform. Currently, Itaú supports more than 14 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, and USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the United States dollar.
Besides trading services, Itaú provides cryptocurrency custody, allowing customers to hold digital assets through the bank’s existing financial infrastructure. The notification recognizes these activities under Brazil’s regulatory framework without requiring the institution to seek separate operating authorization.
Itaú Highlights Customer Security and Governance Standards
Itaú has emphasized customer security as a central priority since introducing cryptocurrency services to its banking customers. The institution maintained that clear regulations would strengthen the operating environment for digital asset businesses and financial institutions.
Additionally, Itaú identified strong governance and security standards as important requirements for supporting cryptocurrency adoption across Brazil’s financial sector. The bank believes the regulatory framework will establish a stronger foundation for digital asset development in Brazil and internationally.
Brazil’s approach also distinguishes established financial institutions from independent cryptocurrency providers through different authorization procedures and supervisory requirements. Itaú’s formal notification therefore establishes its position as the first financial institution to register these activities under the country’s new rules.
The development confirms the bank’s cryptocurrency trading and custody services within Brazil’s updated regulatory framework, reinforcing its established digital asset operations.
