What Is Happening With HBAR Transfers On Coinbase?

Coinbase is working to restore normal Hedera transfers after some customers experienced delays sending and receiving HBAR, while trading and fiat services remain unaffected. The cryptocurrency exchange first acknowledged the disruption at 10:04 p.m. PDT on Aug. 28, saying users could experience delayed HBAR sends and receives. Coinbase said HBAR buying and selling remained available and that fiat deposits and withdrawals were operating normally. It also told customers their funds were safe. Just under two hours later, at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Aug. 29, Coinbase moved the incident from “Investigating” to “Identified,” saying it had found the issue and was implementing a fix. The exchange had not disclosed the technical cause or provided an estimated time for full restoration as of that update. The disruption affects blockchain transfers rather than trading inside Coinbase. Incoming HBAR deposits may therefore take longer than normal to appear, while customers trying to send HBAR from Coinbase to an external wallet may also experience delays. Coinbase supports Hedera for both trading and custody. Its market data put HBAR at roughly $0.088 on Aug. 29, with a market capitalization of about $3.8 billion and approximately 43 billion tokens in circulation.

Did Hedera’s Network Upgrade Cause The Delay?

The Coinbase incident followed scheduled maintenance on Hedera’s mainnet, although neither Coinbase nor Hedera has linked the two events. Hedera scheduled an upgrade to mainnet version 0.76 for 2:00 a.m. UTC on Aug. 29 and warned users that some services could be disrupted during a maintenance window expected to last about 40 minutes. At 2:16 a.m. UTC, Hedera said the network had been upgraded to version 0.76.3 and was available while additional verification continued. Coinbase did not report its HBAR transfer issue until approximately 5:04 a.m. UTC, about three hours after Hedera’s maintenance began. The timing makes the upgrade relevant, particularly because exchanges sometimes need to update or verify their infrastructure following blockchain software changes. It does not establish that Hedera caused Coinbase’s problem. Hedera’s status information showed the mainnet operational, with its mirror-node services and APIs also functioning. An IBM-operated node was experiencing a partial outage, while a Dell-operated node was undergoing scheduled maintenance from Aug. 27 through Aug. 31. That leaves open the possibility that the disruption sits within Coinbase’s own Hedera integration, including wallet processing, node connectivity, deposit detection or withdrawal broadcasting. Coinbase has not identified the affected component publicly.

Investor Takeaway

Coinbase’s HBAR problem is currently a transfer issue rather than evidence of a Hedera network outage. The distinction matters because HBAR can continue trading normally on Coinbase even while deposits and withdrawals remain delayed.

Is This Part Of A Wider Coinbase Network Problem?

The HBAR disruption follows several network-specific incidents reported by Coinbase during August, although there is no evidence that they share a common technical cause. On Aug. 14, Coinbase reported delayed sends and receives on Sui, with the incident resolved about an hour later. Ethereum transfers were affected by separate delays on Aug. 17, Aug. 20 and Aug. 21, while the Aug. 21 disruption also coincided with delayed ARBETH receives. A separate incident beginning Aug. 22 affected some USDC payments over Polygon through Coinbase Payments. That issue was resolved on Aug. 24, while payments using Base and Ethereum continued operating. Supporting many independent blockchains requires exchanges to maintain separate infrastructure, including wallet systems, transaction-signing processes, deposit monitors, confirmation rules and connections to blockchain nodes. A failure in one of those components can impair transfers for a specific token even when the exchange and underlying blockchain remain broadly operational.

What Should HBAR Holders Watch Next?

For customers simply holding or trading HBAR inside Coinbase, the immediate effect should remain limited while buying and selling continue normally. The disruption matters more for users who need to transfer tokens quickly to self-custody, another exchange, a staking setup or an application running on Hedera. Coinbase’s change from “Investigating” to “Identified” is also important. It indicates that the exchange says it has located the problem and moved to implementing a remedy rather than continuing to search for the cause. The unresolved question is how quickly that fix restores normal transfer processing. Any technical explanation from Coinbase would also help determine whether Hedera’s v0.76.3 upgrade played a role or whether the timing was coincidental. Until then, the incident is best viewed as an exchange-level HBAR transfer disruption rather than a wider Hedera failure. The next important update will be Coinbase moving the incident to monitoring or resolved status and confirming that delayed deposits and withdrawals are processing normally again.
