Google has announced a significant breakthrough in quantum computing, under the leadership of CEO Sundar Pichai. The Google Quantum AI team achieved a notable milestone using the “magic state cultivation” method on their Willow quantum computer. This development has reignited discussions about the long-term security of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Quantum Error Rate Significantly Reduced
According to findings published in the journal Science, Google has managed to reduce the error rate in the preparation of quantum states by a factor of 40 compared to previous methods. The company also reported achieving a logical accuracy level of 99.99% in special quantum states known as T states.
Google declared the new technique a crucial step toward the development of powerful and error-correctable quantum computers.
Google Quantum AI is renowned for its work on quantum hardware and algorithms. The recent breakthrough addresses one of the most challenging aspects of quantum computing: creating reliable quantum states with fewer resources.
Revived Debate on Crypto Security
This progress has brought the resilience of blockchain networks against future quantum computers back into the spotlight. Major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, rely on elliptic curve cryptography to protect transactions and verify digital signatures.
It has long been recognized that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically break these cryptographic structures. Consequently, every significant technical advance in the quantum field accelerates security-focused evaluations within the crypto market.
The results shared by Google do not imply that current cryptocurrencies are under direct threat today.
Scale Not Yet Suitable for Practical Use
Google noted that the demonstrated method has not yet reached the scale required for large-scale practical quantum computing. In other words, there is currently no system capable of breaking the cryptographic infrastructure of Bitcoin or Ethereum.
However, the recent advancement appears to significantly ease one of the most challenging stages in building a quantum computer that could threaten the security of crypto assets. This potentially increases the importance of quantum-resistant solutions in long-term security strategies, even if not immediately.
