It has been a bruising week for crypto prices, but @Starknet's native token $STRK has been a clear exception. At around 11am UTC on October 9, the token was trading up more than 71% on the seven-day chart and roughly 35% higher over the prior 24 hours, a move that stood in sharp contrast to broader market weakness.
A Potential L1 Pivot Drives the Sentiment Shift
The rally appears largely tied to a significant strategic announcement. The Starknet team is seriously considering transforming the network from a Layer 2 solution for Ethereum into an independent L1 blockchain, according to Eli Ben-Sasson, CEO of developer company StarkWare. The motivation is quantum security: transitioning to L1 would give Starknet full control over updates, and Ben-Sasson estimates the network could achieve full quantum resilience by 2027. By comparison, the Ethereum Foundation plans its own quantum resistance for the end of 2029.
There is no formal proposal or governance vote yet. However, the market has responded sharply to the idea. STRK rose to approximately $0.06825 as of 06:48 UTC on October 9, up around 40.1% over 24 hours, outperforming Bitcoin and Ether over the same period. At that snapshot, STRK carried a market capitalization of approximately $507 million, while 24-hour trading volume reached roughly $411.8 million, according to CoinGecko data.
Context: What an L1 Transition Would Mean
Starknet currently operates as an Ethereum Layer 2, submitting cryptographic proofs to Ethereum for verification and publishing data that supports transaction reconstruction.Transitioning to Layer 1 would fundamentally change those security arrangements, with the network relying on its own consensus mechanism instead of Ethereum's settlement infrastructure.Starknet is built on ZK-STARK technology and has developed a post-quantum security migration roadmap.
The plan would end Starknet's reliance on Ethereum for settlement and security, but requires building its own validator network and infrastructure. Investors should note that this remains an early-stage consideration. A proposed direction is not a launched network, a completed migration, or a guarantee that users and applications will move.
