The Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange, Mercado Bitcoin, has temporarily suspended crypto deposits and withdrawals following the detection of a security breach. The company announced that the event did not compromise user data or personal information. As one of Latin America’s leading crypto platforms, Mercado Bitcoin remains committed to safeguarding client assets.

Transactions Suspended as Precautionary Measure

In a statement issued earlier today, Mercado Bitcoin revealed that it had identified a security issue within its systems but swiftly brought the situation under control. Despite this quick response, the platform has paused transaction activities temporarily, allowing its security teams to conduct a thorough investigation and ascertain the potential impact on assets.

Mercado Bitcoin confirmed swift mitigation of the security issue, ensuring no adverse impact on customers, and stated that no data breach occurred.

The exchange emphasized its focus on reinstating operations securely while committing to provide updates through official channels. Additionally, Mercado Bitcoin is collaborating with authorities to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

Suspect Wallet Addresses Disclosed

As part of recent updates, Mercado Bitcoin has shared the wallet addresses involved in activities linked to the security incident. This disclosure aims to aid blockchain investigators and other industry stakeholders in monitoring potentially risky asset movements across various networks.

Preliminary assessments by blockchain security firm Hypernative suggest that the breach could be related to suspicious cryptocurrency transfers exceeding $40 million, spanning multiple networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, and Stellar.

Hypernative’s initial analysis indicated that the volume of dubious transactions exceeded $40 million, affecting a multitude of blockchain networks.

Furthermore, Paolo Ardoino, Chief Technology Officer of Tether, confirmed the freezing by the stablecoin issuer of 4.5 million USDT believed to be connected to the breach. This action illustrates preemptive steps taken to counteract the incident’s effects.

Highlighting Ripple Partnership

Mercado Bitcoin’s strategic partnership with Ripple, a San Francisco-based blockchain company known for its cross-border payment solutions, is also noteworthy. By October 2024, Ripple had announced that Mercado Bitcoin would be the first to utilize its end-to-end managed payment solution in Brazil.

The collaboration aims to streamline cross-border transactions between Brazil and Portugal, enhancing the efficiency of treasury operations. Both parties plan to extend the service to support international payments for both corporate and individual users of Mercado Bitcoin.
