Elon Musk has put a blunt choice to the world's governments: automate or go broke.

"A welfare state and free immigration will obviously bankrupt any country," the Tesla and xAI chief wrote on X on Sept. 14, adding that "AI + robotics is the only path to universal high income" for every person on Earth.

Caution one day, evangelism the next

The post capped a week in which Musk's stance on AI swung between fear and faith.

Days earlier he had backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow frontier development, replying on X, "Dario is right", a rare agreement echoed by OpenAI's Sam Altman.

Yet on economics, Musk is all accelerator: he sees machine labor producing so much, so cheaply, that scarcity itself starts to fade. Donald Trump waved off the safety worries entirely saying, "whoever wins AI, wins."

More on Elon Musk:

The warning Musk keeps repeating

Musk's fear of bankruptcy is not new, and neither is the proposed hole in his fix. He warned in April that once AI and robots flood the economy with output, governments must "issue dollars to people" or trigger massive disinflation.

That is the bind: to fund universal high income, a state has to print, and printing at that scale debases the currency, reaching the same bankruptcy by another road. Inflation is default in slow motion.

The strain is already visible. Top crypto companies such as the Ethereum Foundation, Coinbase, Block, MARA Holdings, and BitGo Holdings have laid off their employees this year, attributing the decision to AI integration.

Why crypto is watching Musk's math

If a welfare state can be bankrupted by spending, and a money-printed "universal high income" can be bankrupted by inflation, both failures share one cause: a currency politicians can create at will.

Bitcoin was built to remove that lever. Its supply is capped at 21 million coins, and no automation boom, election, or emergency can mint more. To its backers, that fixed ceiling is the only honest way to hand out the wealth machines create without quietly clawing it back through debasement.

It is the same thesis pushing institutions toward Bitcoin as a hedge against sovereign debt.

Though Musk didn't mention crypto in his post, each time he warns the traditional financial system will go bankrupt, the crypto community turns it into a pitch for Bitcoin.
