Solana infrastructure provider Anza has issued an urgent alert to mainnet validators regarding a critical Linux kernel vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-98432, which allows remote, unauthenticated attacks that could lead to code execution on unpatched servers. The warning was published Sunday evening as a preemptive measure, as Ubuntu, the primary operating system used by Solana’s validator nodes, had not yet released a patch for the vulnerability.

Critical Linux bug threatens validator nodes

The vulnerability, first detected by an artificial intelligence research model developed by Anthropic, exposes validator infrastructure to significant risks. According to Anza’s requirements page, Solana validators predominantly use Ubuntu 24.04 for deployment. However, as of Monday afternoon, the Ubuntu security tracker listed both its 24.04 and 22.04 standard kernels as unpatched and vulnerable. Fixes were reportedly in progress, but had not been made available at that time.

Tim Garcia from the Solana Foundation emphasized the seriousness of the issue, confirming that while the flaw had been addressed in the upstream Linux kernel, Ubuntu users must apply alternative mitigation steps until official patches are released.

Solana Foundation’s Tim Garcia explained that operators running Ubuntu should follow interim security measures, as the critical flaw remains unpatched in Ubuntu’s standard kernels despite fixes being in progress upstream.

The bug has been rated with a 9.8 severity score by the CVE-issuing organization, signaling a high-priority threat. NIST has yet to assign its own score for this specific vulnerability.

AI uncovers new threat vectors

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence safety and research company, revealed that one of its unreleased models discovered and built a functional exploit for the bug. Anthropic’s research showed that an attacker without credentials could run commands as root on a Linux server configured with a multipath TCP listener, simply by sending malicious network packets. In their test, it took 48 minutes to extract a kernel memory address and only five more minutes to gain shell access for command execution.

Jim Bianco, a macro strategist, commented in an episode of Bits + Bips recorded prior to Anthropic’s post that industrial-scale AI now searches through tens of billions of lines of code, rapidly surfacing vulnerabilities that would be difficult to detect manually.

AI assistance in uncovering vulnerabilities has become more prominent. In July, the Ethereum Foundation reported that its own AI agents had discovered a genuine bug affecting blockchain validators.

Patch status across major Linux distributions

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released updated kernels for Amazon Linux 2 and Amazon Linux 2023, advising that updating the kernel and rebooting systems serves as the only comprehensive solution. AWS also provided interim steps, such as disabling multipath TCP and filtering IPv4 packets with IP options, though it stated these do not fully address the issue. The company reported no observed exploitation in the wild as of their latest update.

Red Hat, a leading enterprise Linux distributor, rated the flaw as Critical and noted that while advanced packet filtering reduces exposure, it cannot completely mitigate the risk and may disrupt essential workloads. Customers were urged to prioritize applying the official patch once available.

Linux Distribution Patch Status Advisory Comments Ubuntu 24.04/22.04 No official patchFix in progress Apply interim mitigations Amazon Linux 2/2023 Patched Kernel update and reboot required Red Hat Enterprise Linux Patch pending Packet filtering reduces risk, not complete mitigation

The risk is particularly relevant for Solana validators, as their setup requires a public IPv4 address, and the bug can be triggered by maliciously crafted packets targeting an exposed IPv4 TCP port.

Recent developments in Solana ecosystem

This security alert arrives shortly after Solana activated Alpenglow, its new consensus engine, on mainnet. Enhanced vigilance is required as critical network upgrades often prompt increased scrutiny from both researchers and attackers seeking vulnerabilities.
