Standard Chartered has launched a custody service for Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, placing one of the world’s largest trade-finance banks at the center of institutional stablecoin safekeeping. The move extends Standard Chartered’s push into digital-asset infrastructure and gives RLUSD holders access to bank-grade custody for the first time.

Standard Chartered Launches RLUSD Custody Service

The announcement adds RLUSD to Standard Chartered’s expanding roster of digital-asset services. The bank has been building crypto infrastructure across multiple fronts, having previously signaled plans for a Singapore-based crypto custody operation and later launching institutional Bitcoin and Ether trading for clients.

RLUSD is Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin, built for institutional settlement and cross-border payment flows. Ripple has been expanding the token’s infrastructure through Ripple Mint, its institutional minting and redemption platform for RLUSD. Standard Chartered’s custody service adds the next layer: secure holding of assets after they are issued. What RLUSD Custody Means for Digital-Asset Safekeeping

Custody means Standard Chartered holds RLUSD on behalf of institutional clients, taking responsibility for the private keys and security infrastructure that control the assets. It is distinct from trading or issuing the stablecoin, and it is the function regulators and risk officers focus on most closely. For institutions that need to hold stablecoins on their balance sheets, regulated custody from a major bank addresses a persistent operational barrier: counterparty risk. Self-custody or reliance on crypto-native custodians can conflict with internal risk policies at asset managers, corporates, and banks.

Standard Chartered’s positioning mirrors what it did for Circle’s USDC. The bank partnered with Circle to launch a USDC mint and redemption service for eligible clients, suggesting a deliberate strategy to anchor stablecoin infrastructure relationships with major issuers, not just trade around them.

Why Institutional Custody Could Matter for RLUSD Adoption

A custody relationship with Standard Chartered gives RLUSD a credibility layer that crypto-native infrastructure cannot easily replicate. Institutions already banking with Standard Chartered can access RLUSD exposure without onboarding a separate custodian or navigating unfamiliar counterparties.

Standard Chartered’s involvement also signals broader appetite among global banks to compete for stablecoin custody mandates. The bank has been tightly threaded through the institutional crypto ecosystem, including its role in OKX’s capital raise alongside Ripple and Circle. XRP, Ripple’s native token, trades on major platforms including CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap, where institutional attention to the Ripple ecosystem is tracked in real time.

Whether RLUSD achieves meaningful adoption in institutional settlement will depend on client uptake, regulatory clearance in key jurisdictions, and how Ripple develops the stablecoin’s use cases. The custody infrastructure is now in place. The harder question is who uses it, and at what scale.
