The Starknet community has begun voting to determine whether to explore a transition to a self-contained, quantum threat-resistant Layer 1 structure. The vote, which opened today and will last seven days, is non-binding.
At the heart of the proposal is the argument that a portion of Starknet’s security is tied to Ethereum’s infrastructure and update schedule. Specifically, the Ethereum bridge and data accessibility scheme are described as dependencies that Starknet cannot change on its own.
In contrast, it is argued that Starknet’s hash-based STARK proofs and computational structure provide an advantage in post-quantum security research. The standalone network option aims to bring more of this research directly under Starknet’s control.
The community announcement stated that regardless of which path is chosen, the existing token will remain STRK and no new tokens will be issued. It was also stated that the bridges from Ethereum to Starknet will remain open.
A “yes” vote won’t mean the network will immediately separate from Ethereum. First, research will begin, followed by detailed proposals and new votes. A “no” vote would mean that post-quantum security work will continue within the existing Layer 2 structure.
The chart shows the recent increase in STRK price.
